I’m glad we’re not living in the 50′s

I was watching another movie last week. this time — The Apartment with Fred MacMurray, Jack Lemmon, and Shirley MacLaine.  Have you seen it? First, Great Movie! But, OMG! I mean OMG!!!! Times at the office sure have changed, haven’t they?

I always thought the fifties were fabulous…but, were they really?

Granted, they seemed to be really living it up…three martini lunches, extramarital affairs, wild parties and the like. But, the undertones were so discriminatory and closed minded, and a little creepy by today’s standards.   There were few options for women back then — teacher, nurse, secretary, and…uh, elevator operator. I think I speak for most women when I say that I’m particularly glad that this is no longer the case.

There was one particularly ironic scene where Jack tells Shirley all the things/facts he knows about her. Where she was born, her weight, age, social security number, etc. I’ll give you a hint, he didn’t Google her. No, he looked up her card in the group insurance file. How’s that for privacy?

So, if you want a fun looksee into where we’ve been, then see the film. When was the last time you thought about Rolodexes, rotary phones, typing pools, interoffice envelopes (remember those?), switchboards and the like?
